Discuss with your partner what you feel Materials Science is all about in the 4 areas of structure of materials, nature of materials, classes and properties of materials, and chemical changes of materials.
Some key questions to ponder:
1. How do we account for the diversity of substances around us?
2. How do physical and chemical changes affect the properties of a material?
3. How does the structure of materials affect their properties? Get students to share their responses verbally.

ReplyDelete1) Different things need different properties of materials. So there must be a variety of substances around us.
2)Eg. A piece of wood is big and hard. After it gets burnt, it turns into ashes. Ash is small, soft and fragile. So the physical change is~ Big to small. The chemical change is hard to soft.

ReplyDeleteHow do we account for the diversity of substances around us?
There are a large variety of substances around us.
How do physical and chemical changes affect the properties of a material?
It can change its shape and appearance.
How does the structure of materials affect their properties?
If the rubber is thick, it will not be as flexible as a thinner one.

ReplyDelete1.Most of man-made materials are created by combining matter with other materials, hence,we account for the diversity of substances around us.
2.Physical changes do not affect much on properties of materials however, chemical changes could affect the properties. For example,if you burn wood, the ashes would not have the same properties as wood.

ReplyDeletethere are many substances around us as man need substances for each daily purpose.
It can change the color, odor, hardness, texture, luster, volume or size, shape, solubility , molecular polarity , freezing, boiling and melting points, taste, magnetism, density, salinity, absorbency, and many others.
If something is to be too thin, it would break.

ReplyDeleteAns: We can try 'mixing' them together to produce stronger and better material.
Ans: It can change the shape of the material by heating or cooling it.

ReplyDelete1. How do we account for the diversity of substances around us?
There are many different types of atoms around Earth itself. Some exist naturally while some are man-made/synthetic. In total, there are - atoms in the world and there are still inventing more atoms by researching. Since there is - atoms, we can create lots of different compounds and then to combinations of compounds. That is how we make different types of materials. Since there are different compounds, in every material, there are different properties too.
2. How do physical and chemical changes affect the properties of a material?
It can affect the: size, shape, its ability to stretch, transparency, radioactivity, colour, strength, hardness, ability to dissolve, ability to reflect light.
3. How does the structure of materials affect their properties? Get students to share their responses verbally.
The stream-line shape of a car (its speed/friction), the lattice structure of gold atoms (hardness).
Q: Why do we account for the diversity of substances around us?
ReplyDeleteA: Because when we have different kinds of substance we can mix more substances to create more kinds of objects.
Q: How do physical and chemical changes affect the properties of a material?
A: Chemicals (eg. acids) can oxidize and will affect the properties of the material.
Q: How does the structure of the material affect its properties?
A:If the material is bulky it will be heavy while when the material is small it is light weight.

Q: Why do we account for the diversity of substances around us?
ReplyDeleteA: I think the substances are combined to make better materials which inturn makes better objects.
Q: How do physical and chemical changes affect the properties of materials?
A: Materials might have properties that they normally do not have. eg:ametal rod might bend if exposed to heat.
Q: How does the structure of the mterial affect its properties?
A: If a object is hard (eg:metal.) it means its molecules are tightly packed. If the molecules are loosely packedthe object will become soft.
Q: How do we account for the diversity of substances around us?
ReplyDeleteA: We need to use many different types of substances to make things that we use for daily activities.
Q: How do physical and chemical changes affect the properties of a material?
A: The material can change in it's shape, size, colour, texture, hardness and strength.
For example:When a metal is heated,it expands.Hence,the size changes.
Q: How does the structure of materials affect their properties? Get students to share their responses verbally.
A: For example:Most boats have streamline structures, this allows it to move faster.
